TACS: Mental Filters & Normalcy Bias
Human beings are subjective beings. Due to limitations in our ability to process all the available sensory data (see, hear, feel data), we all have our own “Book of Shoulds” or cognitive maps. We see the world according to what’s important to us. When we have an addiction the most important thing to us is protecting our ability to engage in that addiction. We may not allow that awareness into our conscious mind because we would like to think it is our spouse, or family, or God etc that is most important to us. But when we break promises to them over and over again, the fact is that the addiction wins out. The above video shows how we subconsciously make it OK to continue a behavior that is obviously NOT good for us. The final story in the video I call "Zebras and Giraffes." It explains how by working a recovery PROGRAM we can break free from the addiction and reprogram ourselves for recovery. (See the videos on Neuroplasticity for more)
